What Makes It Uncommon

The Sunday crossword has a life beyond the breakfast table in Holly Anne Mitchell's imaginative jewelry. Working with recycled newspaper, she forms puzzle pages into beads and stitches them together with metal accents, preserving a little of the pleasure of ink on paper in a piece made to wear. The elasticated bracelet gives devoted solvers an affectionate nod to their favorite pastime, even on days when that last clue refuses to cooperate.

Recycled newspaper is hand-formed into beads and stitched alongside metal accents.
Choose Narrow, measuring 0.5" in width with silver-plated beads, or Wide, measuring 1.4" in width with stainless steel beads.
Elasticated design measures 6.8" in relaxed circumference.
Handmade in Indiana.

A metalsmithing assignment with one unusual rule changed Holly Anne Mitchell's creative direction: no metal or precious stones allowed. Studying fine arts at the University of Michigan in 1990, she chose newspaper comics for their brilliant colors. Years of trial and error followed as she developed a way to turn yesterday's news into jewelry. Now based in Indianapolis, Holly Anne cuts newspaper into strips, hand-forms beads, and hand-stitches them into pieces sealed with a moisture-resistant coating. Comics, crosswords, headlines, and even expired coupons find new life in her hands, inviting people to take a second look at something they might otherwise throw away.
