Artist <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uncommongoods.pro\/artist?artistId=30985&amp;source=blog_ms_heartbottle\" target=\"_blank\">Philippe Bouveret<\/a> truly marries science and poetry in our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uncommongoods.pro\/product\/beating-heart-in-a-bottle-sculpture?source=blog_ms_heartbottle\" target=\"_blank\">Beating Heart in a Bottle Sculpture<\/a>: two halves of a heart joining together again and again in a rhythm much like the beating of our own hearts. Thanks to the power of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Capillary_action\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">capillary action<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the piece is almost like a living work of art. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Never lacking in inventiveness and always eager to experiment, Philippe spent years (from the ages 13-18) building a real, 6m long boat. Eventually, after getting a technical degree, he traded his plans of becoming a naval architect for more artistic endeavors: assisting in the construction of Jean Tinguely\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-Ss4CSFahCc\" target=\"_blank\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cyclops<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, an enormous moving sculpture tucked away deep in the forest, creating massive <a href=\"http:\/\/www.philippebouveret.com\/portfolio\/balanciers\/\" target=\"_blank\">pendulums<\/a> and fountains, and crafting &#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.philippebouveret.com\/fr\/project\/tableaux-secrets\/\" target=\"_blank\">hidden tableaus<\/a>&#8220;<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that reveal unexpected objects simply by placing an aspirin tablet in a provided slot. Much of the work Philippe has created, either on his own or in collaboration with other artists, engages the viewer in a game of sorts. Now, you can find him continuing to follow his playful sensibilities, working in his \u201claboratory-studio,\u201d as he calls it, \u201caccidentally making little discoveries that arouse [his] curiosity.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"940\" height=\"529\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/INjaTtMi-j4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Acclaimed art collector and museum director<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pontus_Hult%C3%A9n\" target=\"_blank\">Pontus Hult\u00e9n<\/a> describes Philippe\u2019s work as containing \u201can intriguing element, like a happy secret, an awareness of something that leads on much further, towards infinity.\u201d We\u2019re pleased to share the happy secret of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uncommongoods.pro\/product\/beating-heart-in-a-bottle-sculpture?source=blog_ms_heartbottle\" target=\"_blank\">Beating Heart in a Bottle<\/a> with you&#8211;it\u2019s one of our very first international products that\u2019s exclusive in the USA to only\u00a0our customers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another (not-so) happy secret? Few of us here speak French. And so communicating with Philippe necessitated a bit of extra <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">je ne sais quoi<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. See? I don\u2019t even think I used that right. Fortunately, Philippe\u2019s son Grimaud <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stepped in to help with an interview and ensured that nothing got too lost in translation. Read on to learn more about Philippe\u2019s inspirations and obsessions, as well as what he hopes for everyone who receives a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uncommongoods.pro\/product\/beating-heart-in-a-bottle-sculpture?source=blog_ms_heartbottle\" target=\"_blank\">Beating Heart in a Bottle<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did your parents encourage your artistic leanings?<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, my father used to help me with my work. He was really interested in it&#8211;especially when he was retired, he was visiting me every week in my studio! I had a very strong relationship with him.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are your sources of inspiration?<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My main sources of inspiration are movement and forces of nature. My objective is to make movement with no electricity, and I\u2019ve had this obsession since 1987&#8230;to make something living as long as possible, to approach perpetual movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_53901\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-53901\" class=\"size-full wp-image-53901\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uncommongoods.pro\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/Philippes-Home.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"650\" height=\"433\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-53901\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A peek inside Philippe&#8217;s home, featuring some of his own creations<\/p><\/div>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does it work? <\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It works due to a physical phenomenon called \u201ccapillary action,\u201d the same that allows insects to walk on water.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What have been some of your favorite reactions to your work?<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My favorite reaction is when I see them realizing that they will give proof of their love to someone, and when they tell me which friend or lover will receive the gift. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I think they also love when they leave something and it keeps moving by itself! They imagine the bottle in their living room, showing it to their visitors. It\u2019s like a cat, it moves by itself, it\u2019s silent. Photo via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/ObjetsInventes\/\" target=\"_blank\">Facebook<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How did you dream up the heart bottle? <\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I was completing my military service, and was surprised that we weren\u2019t allowed to &#8220;march&#8221; on the bridges because it could destroy the bridge, specifically because of the rhythm of the steps, it got me thinking. From then on, I was seeking the phenomenon of capillary action everywhere, in pubs\/bars for instance&#8230;I made myself a promise to express nature with simple forms, in a poetic way, and with a rhythmic flow.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/49834740\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" title=\"Philippe Bouveret - Instants d&#039;&eacute;motions\" webkitallowfullscreen mozallowfullscreen allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><em>(If you happen to speak French, you&#8217;ll understand Philippe above. But watch either way to see the bottle assembled and in action!)<\/em><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whose heart(s) were you thinking of when you made it?<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s been a very long process. My research began as a student of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/%C3%89cole_des_Beaux-Arts\" target=\"_blank\">Beaux ARTS Paris<\/a> in 1987.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2001, I felt I needed to make something different than my past sculptures and meet a public audience.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My wife, Doroth\u00e9e, thought the concept of the bottle and the heart was very good&#8211;so I had her heart in mind. The idea to take a \u201ccommon\u201d good, the bottle, and make it uncommon was another very important basis for my work.<\/span><\/p>\n<h5><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What do you hope for people who buy and\/or receive one of these?<\/span><\/h5>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I hope that people will be surprised by the bottle, and see something that they\u2019ve never seen elsewhere&#8211;completely natural, without a screen.
