Here at UncommonGoods, we wanted to do something extra special for Mother\u2019s Day. We know that our moms helped us become the fun bunch of uncommon people we are today, so we\u2019re taking this opportunity to shout out to our outstanding mamas!<\/p>\n

I\u2019m happy to kick off our Uncommon Moms series by sharing a bit about my mom, Carrie.<\/p>\n

Way back in 1980-something, my mom had the first of three little babies, me. My mom always did her best to take care of me, even when\u2014or should I say especially when\u2014times were tough, and she even gave me two pretty awesome little brothers along the way.<\/p>\n

I have a lot of great memories with my mom, but some of our trips together are on the top of the list. The first trip my mom and I took, just the two of us, was a trip to visit my Grandma (who is also an amazing lady) in Arizona.<\/p>\n

We prepared for the trip together, went shopping for new bathing suits (since it was winter back home in Minnesota and we were eager to get some rays and enjoy the pool in sunny Mesa), went on the long drive together to the airport in the nearest major city four hours away, spent the night before our flight in a hotel room in Minneapolis and then embarked on our first real vacation together.<\/p>\n

Don\u2019t get me wrong; I wasn\u2019t a small child when these events took place. I was in my college years. But this trip was still special to me, because it was the first time my mom and I got to spend more than just a few hours together, just the two of us.<\/p>\n

My mom has always spent much of her time working. Even when my brothers and I were small, she worked from home so she could take care of us. When we got older, she worked outside of the home, and put in more hours in a week than some people do in two.<\/p>\n

I\u2019ve learned a lot of lessons from my mom over the years, and even though I\u2019m 1,500 miles away in Brooklyn now, I know I can call her at any time for any reason. And although we haven\u2019t taken a vacation together in quite a while, my living in New York gives her a go-to destination when she wants to take a break from her demanding work life and the long Midwestern winter.<\/p>\n

So Ma, until your next visit, or our next big adventure together, happy Mother\u2019s Day from the Empire State. I love you!<\/p>\n
