We were stumped. &#8220;Because of all these brick buildings?&#8221; I guessed. &#8220;I don&#8217;t think so!&#8221; he teased. &#8220;But seriously, I&#8217;m not sure. Do you know?&#8221; he peered back in the mirror.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Out of guesses, I stared out the window at the jumble\u00a0of modern and old-fashioned storefronts.\u00a0With its scattered cobblestone streets and uncanny industrial vibe (a holdover from when it was a busy shipping center), I felt like I was back in my old\u00a0Pittsburgh neighborhood. That is, until I saw the\u00a0beautiful\u00a0view of New York Bay and the Statue of Liberty directly across from the studio&#8217;s\u00a0dome shaped doors.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uncommongoods.pro\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/RichardUpchurch_17.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-large wp-image-35647\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uncommongoods.pro\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/RichardUpchurch_17-548x365.jpg\" alt=\"Richard Upchurch | UncommonGoods\" width=\"548\" height=\"365\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.uncommongoods.pro\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/RichardUpchurch_17-548x365.jpg 548w, https:\/\/www.uncommongoods.pro\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/RichardUpchurch_17-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.uncommongoods.pro\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/RichardUpchurch_17.jpg 620w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 548px) 100vw, 548px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><em>Richard introduced himself with a comforting flair of southern hospitality. As soon as he learned\u00a0about Emily&#8217;s Georgia roots, he started describing\u00a0his favorite Georgia\u00a0venues\u00a0where he had previously performed as a touring musician, setting the stage for an afternoon with one of the best storytellers either of us had met in a long time. He walked\u00a0us around his studio and described\u00a0how <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uncommongoods.pro\/product\/lil-mib-message-in-a-box?source=blog_richardupchurch\" target=\"_blank\">Lil&#8217; Mib<\/a>,\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.uncommongoods.pro\/product\/zoots-the-kalimba-recorder?source=blog_richardupchurch\" target=\"_blank\">Zoots<\/a>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.uncommongoods.pro\/product\/loopy-lou-the-dj-in-a-box?source=blog_richardupchurch\" target=\"_blank\">Loopy Lou<\/a>\u00a0grew from blocks of wood into sound recording gadgets.\u00a0<\/em><em>He related\u00a0the first days of his business <a href=\"http:\/\/brandnewnoise.com\/\">brandnewnoise<\/a>, and how it&#8217;s grown to become an influential internship provider for inner-city students. He gave us the inside scoop behind the bright green frog in the center of his workstation. (A\u00a0project that involved a crazy collaboration with Wayne Coyne from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flaminglips.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Flaming Lips<\/a><em>!<em>)<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>We pointed to his\u00a0old wooden thumb piano,\u00a0among\u00a0other oddities, and he elaborated with charming,\u00a0sentimental tales. He pointed toward his favorite\u00a0barbecue joint across the street, distinguishing all of the\u00a0clandestine spots that make <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nycgovparks.org\/parks\/red-hook-park\/history\" target=\"_blank\">Red Hook so special<\/a>. With each new story, he<\/em><em>\u00a0built the kind of\u00a0environment that made us\u00a0want to settle into rocking chairs, crack open beers, and chat about life.\u00a0After meeting Richard, I am not surprised that he decided to set up shop in a neighborhood that&#8217;s so full of history, character,\u00a0and unexpected treasures.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Whether\u00a0you&#8217;re looking for creative inspiration, or just hoping to get a sneak peek into an artist&#8217;s everyday life, you&#8217;re in good company. I couldn&#8217;t find one for cheap, so I just built him something that would simulate the experience. I ended up building him a simple voice recorder made out of wood where he could change the sound of his voice. He took it to show and tell, where his teachers inquired about purchasing some. So I made five for his teachers. I made 10 for my first online store at the insistence of my sister-in-law and, well, here I am still building them today.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uncommongoods.pro\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/RichardUpchurch_1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-35645\" src=\"https:\/\/www.uncommongoods.pro\/blog\/\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/03\/RichardUpchurch_1-548x822.jpg\" alt=\"Richard Upchurch | UncommonGoods\" width=\"548\" height=\"684\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you believe that your past experiences have helped you develop your current business?<\/strong><br \/>\nEverything we do is built on previous days and our ability to move forward into something positive. Those days add up. I studied art in college. I got out of college and toured playing music for 10 years. Now here I am at the intersection of art and music making sound gadgets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What was the toughest lesson you learned as a young designer starting a business?<\/strong><br \/>\n&#8220;Workflow&#8221;, &#8220;margins&#8221;, and the jargon can easily outweigh time spent doing what I do best, making art. It&#8217;s quite difficult to constantly step away from the business part and get back to that which I love: the process of creating, building and seeing a physical object materialize from inception. If you find yourself in a room that doesn&#8217;t seem to hold your attention then look for the open door. There is no dead end.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How and when do you decide to celebrate a victory?<\/strong><br \/>\nA victory lap might include a good cappuccino, a movie while we work, cookies (always cookies), and some robot dancing. When? What does that quote mean to you?<\/strong><br \/>\nI think this changes as events in our world change and certainly in my own personal life. So recently, I followed the <a href=\"http:\/\/news.nationalgeographic.com\/2015\/01\/150114-climbing-yosemite-caldwell-jorgeson-capitan\/\" target=\"_blank\">story of Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson<\/a>, the two guys who climbed <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2015\/01\/14\/sports\/the-dawn-wall-up-close.html\" target=\"_blank\">Dawn Wall in Yosemite<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I hope it inspires people to find their own Dawn Wall, if you will. We\u2019ve been working on this thing a long time, slowly and surely. Live music. Dinner parties with interesting storytellers. Bike rides. Laughing really hard with friends. Looking at art. Taking things apart.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Where does collaboration come into play with your craft?<\/strong><br \/>\nCollaboration is at the heart of my process. I am surrounded by talented, positive people who have different ways of seeing and are always ready to create positive change. I try not to get overwhelmed and just keep honing my skills in lots of different areas.
